Lying is a normal part of child development—but that doesn’t mean it should go unchecked.
When your child lies, it’s usually not about being “bad”—it’s about avoiding trouble, gaining approval, or testing boundaries. The goal isn’t to shame them, but to help them understand the value of honesty.
Here’s how to guide them:
- Stay calm when they lie. Reacting with anger can make them hide the truth next time.
- Talk about trust. Explain how honesty builds trust, and lies can break it—gently, in ways they understand.
- Praise truth-telling. When they tell the truth (even when it’s hard), acknowledge it with kindness and encouragement.
- Model honesty. Kids learn more from what you do than what you say. Let them see you owning mistakes and telling the truth, even in small things.
- Create a safe space. Make it okay for them to be imperfect. The safer they feel, the less they’ll need to lie.
